Croatian Natural History Museum

The Croatian Natural History Museum is located in the Amadeo Palace on the ramparts of Zagreb’s Upper Town. The project envisages an expansion of the permanent exhibition area and the creation of new public spaces, while duly respecting the building’s architecture as a protected cultural monument. Exhibition space has been increased by covering the atrium, constructing an underground extension along the building’s northwest edge, deepening the basement, and relocating the storage facilities to a new location. The only visible architectural change is the covering of the atrium with a glass roof, transforming it into a hall. This also increases exhibition space, as its size allows for the display of large specimens, such as flying dinosaur skeletons, large bird or fish taxidermy, which can be viewed from bridges. On the ground floor, spaces have been created for visitor reception, demonstration laboratories and workshops for children, a museum café, and visitor restrooms. In the deepened basement, new exhibition spaces have been formed, while a multifunctional hall is located beneath the atrium. The added basement section is built northwest of the building, and its green roof follows the slope of Tuškanac. Exhibition spaces are organised on the first and second floors, while the attic houses offices and technical rooms.
