The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord

The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord is located in the very centre of the historic core of Zagreb, along the northern edge of Preradović Square. The church was built in 1865–1866 according to the design of architect Franjo Klein on the site of the Catholic Church of St. Margaret, which the Orthodox community purchased in 1794 together with the associated land along Ilica Street. Later, the church was renovated three times by architect Herman Bolle. According to his designs, the interior was first executed in 1883–1884, and a historicist iconostasis painted by the artist Epaminondas Buczewski was installed. Then, in 1899, the tower dome was constructed, followed by completely new façades in 1913–1914. The interior was thoroughly reconstructed in a modernist spirit by architect Stanko Kliska in 1931 1932, and after World War II, the interior walls were renovated several times. In 1987, the artist Dragoslav Jašović painted the sanctuary, and from 2005–2007, Russian masters led by painter Nikolai Mukhin decorated the rest of the interior, including walls and vaults. After the 2020 earthquake, the church underwent a comprehensive renovation, during which it was structurally reinforced and meticulously restored. The works are currently in the final phase.
